Alex: Hi, my name is Alex and I am from Reading, Massachusetts. Lot of my friends are having their wisdom teeth taken out. I would like to know what are they and what problems can be caused.Candice Zemnick: Alex, I -- the question. Actually your wisdom teeth are your third molars which will located all way in the back of your mouth and you are only have four. Unfortunately they can cause problems. They come in the last. They basically erupt into the mouth the last possible time. So late teens, early 20's and what happens is it causes a lot of crowding. That's one bad thing about these third molars. Another thing is that they can become impacted to within bone, within soft tissue or even start to rise at the top and cause an infection called pericoronitis. So you want to make sure that you see a dentist and they do indeed recommend that you have those third molars extracted so that you don't have problems with the aclusion or biting such that you don't have problems with decay or cleaning back there. That will be wise for you to get your wisdom teeth then taken out.
